History of Zumpano Design

History

The company traces its lineage back to 1960, and started as Fred Zumpano, Builder. The company began building modest and economical ranch homes, typical of that period. The focus was on the Kenmore community of Akron, but homes were built across the city, all from an office at the corner of Kenmore Boulevard and 8th Street Southwest. In 1962, small duplex ranch style apartments were added to their building activity in order to satisfy the needs of Akron’s manufacturing workers and their families. By the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, apartments were the company’s primary focus. Founder Fred Zumpano passed away in 1978, leaving behind a legacy of honesty and integrity in business dealings.  Zumpano Design has been awarded the Builder of the Year award by Homebuilders Association in 2001, 2007, 2009, 2014 and 2021, more than any other builder in our region.

1980s

The company became a second generation building company in 1983. Fred E. Zumpano incorporated the business as Fred Zumpano Design and Construction Inc. The company focused on the design and construction of custom homes across Summit County. Fred attended and graduated from Kent State’s School of Architecture and Environmental Design during this period, often going from classroom to building site during a typical work day. The company’s strong interest in good design and a building’s response to the environment was evident, and continues to this day.

1990s

The focus on custom home building increased during this decade, and the company became primarily a design-build operation, specializing in one of a kind luxury homes in Akron’s suburbs. Numerous Best Homes awards were earned, as well as a reputation for finely detailed, custom homes, across the Summit County market, and expanding into Stark and Medina counties for selected projects.

2000 to Present

Custom homes continue to be the core of our company's business.  Commercial work was added to the portfolio, first by the invitation of existing homeowner clients, and later by a partnership and establishment of a separate company, Zumpano + Hanson Development. Today both companies enjoy a reputation for excellence across the Northeastern Ohio marketplace as a provider of homes, office buildings, thoughtfully placed communities  and multifamily developments.
